Craig Macfie has died, according to a release sent out tonight by Eugene Police.
Macfie, a 24-year-0ld University of Oregon student, was hit by a car while riding his bike on 11th Avenue about 2:30 a.m. Friday. He had been at RiverBend hospital since then.
Earlier post has a few more details about the collision and the arrest of the 21-year-old motorist, Patrick Compton, on DUII and other charges.
The release sent out by Eugene Police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin adds: “Any help you can provide in asking witnesses to come forward would be greatly appreciated. Please direct folks who witnessed the crash to contact Officer Scott Dillon at 541-682-5157.”
I’ve lived in Eugene for 11 years and 2011 is the worst year I can remember for fatalities and serious injuries to bicyclists. Perhaps my memory is bad (probably so at this point in my life), but there has been lots of this sort of news this year. What a horrible thing for the family of a student studying abroad…
I was thinking the same thing, Mark. There have been at least four fatal bicycle-car collisions since spring in Eugene, Springfield, and Cottage Grove.
My condolences to Craig Macfie and his family and friends.
My hope is that things like this will really get physically separated bicycle facilities taken seriously.
Ugh.
